Geriatric Exercise: Getting Your Sweat On While Staying Safe

As we age, it's important to make physical fitness a top priority. This is often easier said than done. Follow these tips to ensure that your geriatric exercise plan is safe.

  • Think about geriatric physical therapy. Seeing a physical therapist can help you become aware of any limitations that you have and how to accommodate them in a safe way. Geriatric physical therapy can also help you to work on any old injuries you have that continue to give you pain or discomfort.

  • Talk to your doctor. Before you start any geriatric exercise plan, be sure to get your doctor's okay. They may notice some aspects of your plan that aren't safe, or give you other tips on how you can stay well as you exercise.

  • Be sure to stay hydrated, especially if you exercise outside. It can be tough to realize how much you're sweating when you're outdoors and enjoying yourself. Drinking plenty of water, even before you feel thirsty, is an important part of staying healthy as you exercise.
